About This Course

The Chief Mate Course is your pathway to becoming the second-highest-ranking officer on board, right after the Captain.

If you hold an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate and completed the required sea experience, this course upgrades your skills and qualifies you for more responsibility, leadership, and higher earnings.

With SME’s blended learning program, delivered in collaboration with South Shields Marine School (SSMS), UK, will enhance your skills to manage the bridge, cargo, crew, and emergencies, all while preparing for your UK COC exams.


You can join the Chief Mate course if you -

  • Already hold an OOW (II/1) COC (Unlimited)
  • Have completed the required sea time as a certified Officer
  • Have up-to-date STCW safety certificates
  • Want to step up to a senior rank and grow into Master (Captain) in the future
The Chief Mate program trains to -

  • Plan and execute complex voyages
  • Handle cargo on all types of ships (dry, bulk, liquid, etc.)
  • Manage bridge teams, safety drills, and crew welfare
  • Apply advanced ship stability and meteorology
  • Prepare for UK MCA oral exams, SQA exams, and face real-life shipboard leadership

Phase 1 of the course takes place in India via live - online remote learning classes with the faculty of South Shields Marine School UK, while the second phase takes place face to face at SSMS, UK.
